In the heart of the enchanting rolling hills, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was mainly to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes among the lone tree on the hilltop were his constant co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy orchestrated a troublesome scheme.
Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf here attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This game persisted for a few more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
